By Ejay Khan

On Friday, August 1 at 7:00 pm, join us for Movie Night at 80 Border Street featuring "The Future of Food". American agribusiness, hellbent on controlling the Earth's food supply, has unleashed genetically engineered plants that are taking over family farms and threatening the health of the nation. It may sound like Hollywood science fiction, but it's the truth about what's happening on farms today, according to filmmaker Deborah Koons Garcia. And consumers, she says, need to understand what is at stake and demand changes - before it is too late. Free

On Saturday, August 2 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, Travelin' Light will be performing at the Center. The musicians of Travelin' Light bring a world of experience: Steve Provizer in jazz, Ed Meradith in rock, blues and folk and Gabriele Snyder in classical and theatre. Among them they play trumpet, trombone, bass and piano. Their 4th member is a jazz guitarist. Travelin' Light is challenging but fun; moving and flip; daring and sometimes comforting; never clichéd. $5 Donation

On Thursday, August 7 at 7:00 pm, the Center is pleased to present Sferes & White from Colorado. As an acoustic duo "Sferes & White" have discovered an uncommon synergy, blending clear and luscious harmonies with complex and imaginative guitar playing. Their performances feature an eclectic and soulful combination of blues, roots and rock. "With vocal harmonies that work so well together it sounds almost too good to be true...The View From Here has a feeling of wide open plains and a billion stars lighting the night." ~ Derek Blackmon, from Indie-Music.com. $8 Donation (or bring a friend and get two for the price of one)

Gallery at the Y, East Boston YMCA, 215 Bremen Street, East Boston. Telephone: 617-569-1117. Artist reception, Thursday, July 17 from 6:00 to 8:30 pm. Jake Hart is an accomplished photographer, living in Jamaica Plain. His show, entitled "Two For The Price Of One", exhibits two sides of the artist's work. The display on the lower level contains images that Jake shot early in his photographic career, primarily in Muggia, a town, once part of the Venetian City State, east of Trieste in the northeastern part of Italy. The upper level exhibition is composed of a number of black and white 35 mm diptychs, ranging from abstract to striking realism, from the Caribbean to the Canadian border. Exhibit can be viewed during normal Y hours.
